Toddler Roll to Side Pony

My little one asked me a little while ago for a side ponytail.  With her hair being so short and thin, I wasn't sure how I was going to pull this off.  I have done this style on my oldest all the time but had never thought it would work in my toddlers hair.  But lucky or us it turned out and she loves it.

We started with wet hair then we rolled adding new hair with each roll until it was rolled to the opposite side of her head then we secured it with an elastic.
She likes flowers so we added a flower.

A Story of Transition: Jasmine

Ladies, meet Jasmine! A natural hair transitioner with a pretty awesome story, I hope you all enjoy it!

    Please introduce yourself!
My name is Jasmine, I'm 22, I'm originally from West Virginia, but now I'm living in Nashville, TN. I'm currently majoring in Criminal Justice, & I'm an aspiring makeup artist.

When did you decide you wanted to transition to natural?
Well, I started watching YouTube videos about the subject. Eventually I came across this blog, & just started reading. However, I still wasn't 100% sold on the idea yet. I ended up having to stay in the hospital in early February of 2010, my nurse had locs. So I just started asking questions, & she was just happy to tell me everything I wanted to know. It was then and there that I realized that I was gonna go natural.

Do you plan on being a long term transitioner or a short term?
LONG TERM! I have a TON of respect for women who do the big chop. I've worn short hair before, but I didn't want it to be THAT short. So, I knew that I wanted to retain length. I'm currently 15 months in; I plan on cutting the relaxed ends off once I reach 24 months.

How has it been managing 2 textures throughout this journey of transition?
Sometimes it's a HASSLE! There's been times when I've wanted to just give up. One day I actually stopped by Sally's and bought a relaxer! Luckily, I didn't go through with it, lol.

Are there any products that you have been using that you cannot live without?
Safi Avocado Shea Butter, Carol's Daughter Black Vanilla Shampoo, Shea Moisture Deep Treatment Masque, Trader Joe's Nourish Spa Conditioner, and good ol' fashioned Shea Butter.

Do you have your hair on a “regimen schedule?”
I co-wash & de-tangle with my Nourish Spa Conditioner twice a week (sometimes.) I wash with my Carol's Daughter shampoo twice a month. I DC using my Shea Moisture Masque adding in honey, jojoba oil, and vitamin e oil, under my dryer after every shampoo, I also try to henna once every 3 months.

What’s been your “go to” hairstyle since you’ve decided to go natural?
Twists, braids, and weaves! I don't like to manipulate my hair too much. When I give my hair a break from PT's, I moisturize and put it in a high bun, or in some two strand twists.

What excites you about seeing your natural, kinks, curls and coils?
Because they are MINE! I've had a perm from the age of 8, up until I was 21. I'm breaking free from the "Creamy Crack" and it feels so, so, good.

Where can we find you on the web?
You can find me on Twitter: @JayxChristine, I have a Tumblr: http://vivrant-thang.tumblr.com, and I also have a YouTube channel. I've been slacking on making videos, but you can check it out at:http://www.youtube.com/user/JayxSupreme.

Do you have any advice that you want to share with fellow transitioners?
All I want say is, hang in there. I know sometimes it will be a challenge, and you'll want to give up, but don't! There are so many resources available to you online. Whether you need to vent your feelings/frustrations, or if you're even having doubts, utilize those resources and others will listen and give you feedback. The natural hair community is like a "sisterhood". You'll always have someone there for you.
Thank you for having me Alex, I really appreciate it :)

Captured Curls: Jillz

So, I have been trying to get this cool chick on my blog for a while and she is FINALLY featured! Jillz is a very talented young lady with awesome curls and style. I hope you all enjoy her story as much as I did, enjoy!

    Please, introduce yourself!
I'm Jillz but mostly known as Elle Maxwell (the lyricist). I'm a student, optimist, and most importantly an artist. Currently residing in Southeast, Washington, DC I'm trying to figure out where I fit into the script for this play called "Life".

What is your current hair care regimen?
My current hair regimen differs depending on which way I'm wearing my hair. Now that my hair is at a nice length since I went natural (again), I wear it straight majority of the time. When I do wear it this way I usually just wash with Creme of Nature Sunflower and Coconut Detangling Conditioning Shampoo, condition with Cantu Shea Butter Rinse Out Conditioner, then put Carol's Daughter Hair Balm on my hair (just a little) before I blow dry it and flat iron it. I don't like applying too much heat to my hair than needed so to keep up my style I either pin curl it or just wear a satin bonnet at night. My hair is also naturally thin so I tend to lean more towards the satin bonnet. It gives my hair a bump on the morning.

When my hair is in its natural state I wash with the Cream of Nature shampoo, condition with Cantu, then put on Creme of Nature Lemongrass & Rosemary Leave-in Creme Conditioner. To keep my curls I just add a layer of Shea Moisture Organic Coconut & Hibiscus Curl & Style Milk.

What is your hair type and what works best for your texture?
I think some parts of my hair may be curlier than others but for the most part my hair type is 3c/4a. I find that the above products that I mentioned work best for my hair. Sometimes I may add a little Eco Styler Gel to the mix for my more natural/curly look or Curl Soufflé Medium Curl Cream. Although the Curl Soufflé smells sooo good (think cake batter), both products have the potential of drying out my hair so I use them sparingly. I also have a little spray bottle of water and olive oil to give my hair some moisture when needed.

What reaction did you get when you first decided to go natural?
My boyfriend hated it, lol! I didn't care though because I loved it and my friends and family did as well. I just felt like my life became that much easier. Plus, I've always wanted to experiment with color so that made it a little easier to do.

Did you BC or transition, if so when or for how long?
I BC'd gradually, if that makes any sense. I'm always interested in new hairstyles, especially cuts, and my philosophy is "it's just hair, it'll grow back". So, I initially cut around the sides and back of my head and just had long hair on top. I hadn't gotten a perm for a while now so I had a pretty good length for a cute TWA. About a couple of weeks after I cut the sides and back of my hair off, I went and did the top. All of this happened between October and November of 2010.

What makes you love your kinks, curls and coils?
I LOVE my kinks, curls, and coils because not only do they make me stand out in a club full of hair extensions and weave glue, but they actually make me feel better in my skin. Plus, they help me exercise my individuality and artsiness. Each curl accentuates the next just as each underlying skin tone compliments the other.

Where can we find you on the web?
I'm on Facebook under Elle Maxwell, my website is www.ElleMaxwell.com, my youtube channel is Jillz07, and you can follow me on Twitter @_ElleMaxwell.

Anything EXTRA you want us to know?
My first EP "RUSH" will be dropping VERY soon please check the website and Twitter feed for updates regarding that!!! :)

Guest Blogger: Bree of Art of Being Cool

I was contacted last night by Bree, who runs the Art of Being Cool blog, to see if I would be interested in having her as a guest blogger. I am always looking for new folks to guest blog; having other's peoples work and thoughts on my site helps keep the content interesting and fresh. So I checked out the post she wanted me to feature,I loved it and agreed to have her. I think that you ladies will really find Bree's post helpful, if I get a good response to her work I would love to have her guest blog on the regular. Don't forget to check out her blog, it's pretty cool! (No pun intended, LOL)  Enjoy the post!

Tired of hiding those zits? Well my fellow cool people, I have a very unusual yet valid home remedy to help you stay cool and help your face stay clear! What is it you may ask? OIL!
How many people imagined slapping thick oil on your already greasy face? I know that it sounds crazy, and I thought the same thing as well, until I tried it. As most of my readers know, I just started a new job. Well, the job is 8 hours of intense hard labor in harsh conditions, and my face and skin has gone haywire! So like most of us do, I hit the internet for a solution to my pimply skin, and one of the solutions that I found was using oil to wash your face instead of a harsh acne product. The articles reasoned that the reason that our skin makes oil is because we need it; however using harsh chemicals dries out our skin and makes it even more prone to breakouts. Using a penetrating oil, like olive oil or grapeseed oil (put away the vegetable oil!) to wash your face will give you smooth skin and within a matter of days, you'll see a difference. All of my little white head pimples were gone in 2 days (I kid you not!) I tried this on my brother, who has acne, for one day and after that one use, we could already seen a difference in his skin!

For more information on Oil Face Washes, click here!

Have you/would you ever try the Oil Cleansing Method?

Simple Toddler French Braids

I know this style seems simple which it is but this is a huge style for my toddler who has such thin and short hair.  She was so excited when we could finally french braid.
All you do is make a center part and then french braid each side down to the ends.

Protective Style Challenge

As many of you know, I've been wearing protective styles for months now. Since about December I have tried to wear my hair (95% of the time) in low maintenance styles that include wearing my ends protected, tucked, ect. By December this year I hope to be at or close to arm pit length when my hair is stretched. I definitely think that it's possible to attain and retain that goal and hair length.

I am inviting you ladies to join me in a 3 month PS challenge! (I will keep up the PS challenge after the 3 months is over-- you are welcomed to as well).
This challenge will be simple, fun and a way for us to come together and "fellowship" in a positive way while uplifting one another on our growth journeys. Whether you are growing out a TWA, a bad hair cut, dye job or just want to set a hair goal for yourself and reach it-- you are all welcomed! If this is something you'd be interested in click the jump for details.

    (image from google search)

(My) 3 month Goal: 2.5 inches of growth.  Your goal does not have to be the same as mine--make your own if you'd like.

Side note: Hair usually grows about a 1/2 inch a month. The goal is to retain that growth and see a change in length your length.

    How to meet that goal:

    • NO HEAT
    •  NO cutting (unless you have to eliminate single strand knots)
    • NO dry brushing/combing
    • Handle your hair with care
    • Wash when NECESSARY (I will be washing my hair in between protective styles, about once ever 2.5 weeks)
    • Deep conditioning 2x a month
    • Sealing moisture into the hair to eliminate breakage and dryness
    • Keeping ends tucked and in styles that are low maintenance
    • Taking vitamins and drinking ample amounts of water
    Style Options:

    • Buns
    • Twists
    • Braided updos
    • Full weave installs (where hair is SEWN NOT GLUED)
If you have any other style option ideas please leave them in the comment box below.

    Recording your growth:

The options for recording your growth are as follows-
    • Via email- I was thinking we could all check-in once a month with pictures of our growth, styles, tips and questions over email.
    • Blogs- if you are a blogger you can easily post your growth directly on your blog and link send me the to share with everyone who is participating.
    • YouTube- making growth videos is always a good way to share what's going on in your journey
    • Twitter- #naturalhair chat is another easy way to share what is going with you and your curls
Let me know which idea you like most in the comment box and we can go from there! The PS challenge will start on August 1st, 2011 and end on November 1st, 2011.  I would like the people who want to participate to leave their emails below so I can get in touch with everyone by the 31st of July. Pleas record your start length if you can. I have in a PS right now so I won't be able to until I take it down in a couple of weeks.  I am very excited to start this journey with you all, this is going to be fun!

Great Slip with Vo5's Strawberries and Cream Conditioner

    CVS, $0.89

Ingredients: Water Aqua, Cetyl Alcohol, Cetrimonium Chloride, Stearalkonium Chloride, Stearyl Alcohol, Steareth-21, Glyceryl Stearate, Fragaria Vesca (Strawberry) Leaf Extract, Glycine Soja (Soybean) Seed Extract, Tocopherol Acetate, Biotin, Niacinamide, Polysorbate 20, Ascorbic Acid, Panthenol, Propylene Glycol, DMDM Hydantoin, Disodium EDTA, Fragrance Parfum, Red 33 CI 17200

Ingredient Attributes: silicone free, sulfate free, paraben free, glycerin free (via Naturally Curly)

My Experience: I have heard so many good things about Vo5's conditioners from fellow naturals. The product is cheap and provides great slip while detangling. I saw that it was on sale for $0.89 at CVS and I had to get a bottle to try for myself! Y'all know I love a bargain so a 15oz conditioner for LESS than $1 was an awesome buy. I've gone into a few different CVS before looking for the strawberries and cream conditioner but it was always sold out, so I was happy to get my hands on it this time around.  I used this conditioner while taking down the cornrows under my weave install. Every cornrow I took down, I lathered with conditioner, detangled and clipped off the the side to prevent matting and tangles. I was so impressed at how well my hair responded to it. My shed hair literally slid out very easily without snagging or knotting around my hair strands. I should have bought a few bottles of this stuff because I love it.  It smells like a great, like strawberry ice cream and it gets the job done.  I have also used it to co-wash and I was also very satisfied at the results. My hair was soft, moisturized and easy to comb through once the conditioner was rinsed out. My experience with this Vo5 conditioner was good and I am glad I gave it a try to see what all the hype was about.

Overall: I like this conditioner and I will be repurchasing when I see it on sale for just 89 cents! Such a great buy and it works very well. I would definitely recommend kinky, coily, curly haired ladies to try this out if you need a product that provided great slip at a affordable cost.

Captured Curls: Javania

Ladies meet Javania! I came across this natural hair beauty and her awesome hair via Twitter a couple of weeks ago. Once I clicked her avi picture and saw her hair I had to have her featured so I quickly shot her a DM to see if she was interested, she was!
I liked reading her about her journey and I'm sure you will too! Click the jump to read Javania's story.

    1.        Please, introduce yourself!

Hello gorgeous people!! My name is Javania M Webb and I am a fabulous woman coming into her own. I have my own business mentoring and speaking to women about empowerment, self-esteem/self-worth among other things.  I also work at a mental health agency in the crisis department helping people not commit suicide or homicide. I am also a Graduate Student studying “Non-Profit Administration” and have big plans for this master’s degree that I did not want to continue halfway through, but nonetheless I will be done May 2012.

    2.      What is your current hair care regimen?

I have my hair in mini-twists for the summer, I live in St. Louis and it is too hot to do my hair and put the extra heat on it.  During the other seasons, I wash my hair bi-weekly.  Before I wash I detangle with conditioner, then wash, then deep condition (suave conditioner with honey) after detangling again and either sit under the dryer for 30 minutes or keep it on for a hour or so, then rinse, towel dry, blow out in low heat with CHI silk infusion, then use hemp seed butter to twist.

    3.      What is your hair type and what works best for your texture?

I love big hair, my hair is really tight with out blowing it out and I do not know the number, do not pay attention to that.  I am on a strict budget so I try different shampoos and conditioner that fit my money at the time.  I have tried shampoo from Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s, and Sally’s.  But the best is suave conditioner with honey.  Aphogee works well with my hair also.

    4.      What reaction did you get when you first decided to go natural?

Not good. I went natural twice.  The first time I was transitioning but I got upset and one day went to my hair stylist and cut it all off and had a fade. Everyone hated it, I even had one “friend” talk me into getting a relaxer, which is why I went back to the creamy crack, and I hate that I listened.  I did not get another relaxer after I was talked into it.

    5.      Did you BC or transition, if so when or for how long?

I transitioned for six months the second time around I decided to go natural and then did the big chop because I was tired of the two textures. Now everyone loves my hair, but there are some who are still negative and I can care less. This is my head and my life!!

    6.      What makes you love your kinks, curls and coils?

I love how my hair frames my face, I love how big my hair gets, I love how my hair is unique in it’s own right.

    7.      Where can we find you on the web?

www.javaniamwebb.com  (under construction) Email: javaniamwebb@gmail.com Twitter: JavaniaMWebb Facebook: Javania.m.webbInc (fan page)

    8.      Anything EXTRA you want us to know?

Anyone in the St. Louis area I am having my first workshop August 12, 2011 “Embracing Who You Are” $20 includes food and journals.  You can purchase tickets at http://embracingwhoyouare.eventbrite.com Thank you for your time! :)

Lauren Braid to Pony

This is another Lauren hairstyle from the TV show Make it or Break it.
We just recently cut my daughter's hair and gave her bangs so her style looks a little bit different.
First start by making a part from front of her ear to the front of the other ear.  Pull the hair in the back out of your way.
I started just above her right ear and made a french braid.  The key to this braid is pulling the hair under rather than over.  This makes the braid stand up on her head rather than lay flat. French braid all the way across the top front of her head.
Secure the bottom of the braid with a clear elastic.
Pull all the hair into a low ponytail.
Take a small piece of hair and wrap the elastic.

4th of July Fancy Hair

This was done for the 4th of July but can be used for any holiday all you have to do is change the decorations you use.
I started by making a front poof.
Then I braided her sides up.  Each side gets french braided up to the middle of her head.
Then pull all the hair into a ponytail
    Now make a messy bun.
Then I found a red white and blue paper weight at the dollar store I pulled them apart and the 2 picture below are the items separated.
I pulled this one into individual strands and started to tie them into her hair.
The picture below has wire in it and was easy to wrap in and out of her hair.
Below is the back of her hair.

Right before it got dark we took glow in the dark bracelets and wrapped them through her hair as shown below.

Twisted UpDo

The weave is OUT ladies and I am so proud to say that I kept it in for over 2 months! That's sooooooooooo epic for me, LOL. Taking the weave install down was a pain and it reminded me why I am not a big "weave wearer" but my hair did grow A LOT!  The shed hair was ridiculous but I made sure I detangled in sections with LOTS of conditioner before washing. That is KEY to avoid tangling, knotting and breakage during the detangling process. Overall, my kinky curly weave experience was super fun and I will be buying more hair in a couple of months. I want the 18" hair next time so I can wear buns and ponytails a little easier. The 12" hair shrinks a lot, FYI! For now I will continue to wear protective styles to achieve my APL hair goal. My hair is CBL (collar bone length) for the most part when stretched. My bang area, however is MUCH shorter because when I was wearing it pressed I had my bangs cut in a side swoop--waiting for them to catch up to the rest of my hair. Growing out a cut is a pain sometimes...

Any who the above style I did on my own *gasp* yes, I achieved my first updo all by myself! The video on how I twisted the bang area is under the jump. ENJOY!

    xoxo,
    Alex

Hair Rules Kinky Curl Cream

I stumbled across my Hair Rules Kinky Curl Cream under my sink a couple of days ago and decided to give it a try AGAIN. The first 2 times I was not a fan of the product but this time around I got great definition using the products as a styling aid for twisting in prep for a twist out versus a wash n go.

I made a YouTube video that will be posted under the jump and I wanted to get you fellow naturals opinion on something. This products description is "This amazing, ultra-moisturizing curling cream transforms spongy 'fro and kinks into bouncy, luscious spirals, simply and effortlessly. Stretches and defines tightly wound tresses without chemical or thermal manipulation." Now, the part I highlighted in red is what I disagree with, personally I do not think that tight kinky hair cannot be "transformed" into BOUNCY LUSCIOUS SPIRALS but that's just my opinion. In my mind I am picturing type 4 curls becoming type 3 curls-- maybe it's just me. HairRules YT channel left a comment on the video which you can check out for yourself. Doesn't seem like they were too keen on my opinion.

I do think that there are products on the market, like this one, that can definitely enhance the natural curl pattern of ones hair but NO PRODUCT can give you what you don't already have. What do you ladies think about that? Please leave your comments in the box below, I think this can lead to some GREAT natural hair convo.

    xoxo,
    Alex
