Sharing the Spotlight: French Braid Out on Rae

Yep, you read that right. I'm putting myself in the spotlight today. Forgive the poor quality of the pictures. I discovered that it's really hard to take a picture of myself from behind and, of course, Syd wasn't home to help. Go figure. So it was just me, my mirror, and my camera phone.

After wearing my hair in a ponytail every day for almost 2 weeks, I decided it was time to do something different. My natural hair is very thick, coarse, frizzy, and has enough body to almost be called wavy. You can't quite call it wavy, but you can't quite call it straight, either. It's really hard to wear it down without doing something to either straighten it out or make more defined waves/curls. I didn't want to grab the flat iron, so I decided to give myself a braid out instead.

I started in the evening with clean, damp hair. I didn't add any styling product, mostly because I'm running low on almost everything and wanted to save the product for Syd's hair. :)  I used my finger to part my hair into two sections. I didn't even try to make the part straight because I knew the braids were coming down in the morning. I french braided each side and secured the ends with rubber bands.

In the morning, my hair still wasn't completely dry. I left the braids in for about an hour after I woke up, but knowing I had that crazy crooked part on my head was driving me nuts so I went ahead and removed the braids. It was almost completely dry by the time the braids came out. The top was laying funny, so I pulled the front back with a clip and this was the result.

That picture was taken a couple of hours after the braids were removed. The wave pattern was a little tighter right after the braids came down, but it fell a little since I hadn't used any products with hold and my hair wasn't dry when the braids were taken out. Regardless of all that, I liked the results a lot.

A Man's P.O.V: Nafis

    Name: Nafis
    Age: 26
    Location: Philadelphia

How important is a woman’s hair to you? Especially if you are dating her, does she have to wear her hair a certain way to keep grab your interest? (i.e. which styles down vs. ponytail vs. bun, hair length? To me, hair is just hair; however, I do feel that nomatter what hairstyle a woman wears it should always be well kept and neat. AsI get older, I do see myself paying more attention to a woman’s hair now moreso than ever before. At this stage in my life, I feel like everything comesinto play when dating a woman including their hair. By me being a very activeand adventurous person (i.e running, working out, water fun etc.), I need awoman who is ready and down for adventure just as much as I am without therestrictions of a hair issue.

Do you think that there is a ‘Natural Hair Movement’ or trend going on these days? Why do you think so many women are choosing to go natural now, do you think it’s a fad? Right now it does seem like the natural hair thingis big. Honestly, I really don’t know why that is. There are a ton of naturalhair blogs and videos out there now so I think that may add to it but also Ithink lot of times people just get bored and might want to try somethingdifferent. I was told by a good friend of mine that, “only the strong survive.Having natural hair is a lot of work.” So with that said, I think that willseparate the true natural women from the fad followers

Would you support your partner or family members (i.e. mother, sister, daughter) if she decided to become natural? Of  course! ILOVE women with natural hair. It says a lot about their character I think. Tobe honest, I think I’m more attracted to those with natural hair than thosewithout it. Don’t get me wrong I appreciate and have love for all black womenbut it’s just something about a natural woman that I’m drawn to. Natural womenhave always stood out to me. They represent a part of our culture that has beenstripped away from us. I feel we’ve been conditioned to believe what is consideredto be beautiful, normal, or good-looking when it comes to women especiallyblack women and their hair.  Naturalwomen have my upmost respect because it takes courage and confidence to do whatthey’re doing and to me that speaks volumes.  I’ve been telling my mother for years to getlocs. I think she’d look awesome with them but she won’t do it lol

How important is hair texture to you? If your significant other were to go natural, would the texture of her hair affect your opinions on whether she should remain natural or not? Texture isn't really important to me. Fine, medium, coarse, curly it doesn't really matter. Besides, I can’t be too picky about awoman’s texture when mine is like a Brillo pad lol

What is your definition of “Good Hair” and how do you feel about the word “Nappy?” Growing up, “good hair” to me always meant wavy, soft, straight or long hair. I think we as a people are forced to believe that. Now that I’m older I think that “good hair” is whatever kind of hair makes youfeel good. Whether it be natural or weave, relaxed or loc’d, long or short. Ifit makes you feel good, rock out!

Would you rather your partner wear her hair natural or in a weave? Why or why not? As I mentioned before, I’m a very active person andI would like my partner to be also to a certain extent without her hair holdingher back.  But above all else, I want herto be happy so if that means wearing a weave then that’s something I would haveto deal with. However if I had to choose, it would be natural.

If you are involved with a woman do you think she should consult with you when it comes to making changes to her hair? Not really but I think that depends on the change. If she wants to go completely shaved after having a head full of hair, I think sometype of heads up would be nice lol But after awhile, I think you kind of knowhow far your woman will go with her hair.

Why does it seem like some men are “hung up” on hair length? Does it matter to you? Again, I think this is something that has been forcedon us through the media and everything else we as a people are so consumedwith. The long hair fetish goes backdecades along with this whole “light-skinned” non sense. For YEARS, they’vebeen the only symbols of beauty for black people in this country. It’s beenregurgitated and passed down from generation to generation. There was a timewhen a black person wouldn’t get a chance in Hollywood if they were darker thana brown paper bag. I think this way of thinking has stuck with us.   Her length is not important to me.

Would you be supportive in your partner’s journey togo natural?
    Without a doubt.

What makes black women and their hair unique and beautiful to you? Everything about a black woman makes them unique andbeautiful. Their lips, hips, ass (Can I say ass on here? Lol), sassiness, eventheir hair. They all represent beauty. This might sound crazy but to me naturalwomen have a sense of “realness” about them that makes them unique.Immediately, you get the sense that they are down to earth, cool, and openminded. That right there alone is a beautiful thing.  There is nothing more beautiful and sexy thana confident, educated, curvy, down to earth, open-minded natural black woman.

Who is your favorite “curly girl?” (i.e. celebrity, actress, friend, ect.) Erykah Badu, Amel Larrieux, and Alexandra Smith allthree of these women are dope and amazingly gorgeous.

Quick Update: 2 Cornrows

Hi everyone! I apologize for my absence lately. We always have a lot going on and it's been even busier than usual around here: moving, sports, homework, etc. As a result, Syd hasn't been on the receiving end of very creative hairstyles. For the last week or so, she's just been rocking a couple of thick cornrows.

Not sure what's up with the lighting in this one

This is a great go-to style for us. Syd participates in cross country and has meets 3 days per week with practice on her off days. This means lots of sweat. We can take down the cornrows every other day, give her hair a quick wash or co-wash, and put them right back in. Quick, easy, and her hair is out of her face and off her neck, which are both important at this point.

The regular cross country season ends after next week. I promise to have some more creative styles after that! :)

Fun Updo!

I am loving my loc updo right now. It is a fun look that isgreat for the office or for a formal event.

Get this look!   To createthis updo, try the following steps below. If you can, wash your loc'sfirst or spritz them with a setting spray, so that when you take your hairdown (after you hair is completely dry), you will have a nice curlpattern.
    1.      Braidyour loc's into sections, using 6 or so loc's per braid. Use a rubber band thatmatches your hair color, to secure the end each braid.  I always washmy hair the night before I do this style, so it gives my hair a chance todry a bit, before creating this updo.
    2.      To startthe updo, pull all your braids into a high ponytail.  Ialways do a two section ponytail because my loc’s are long and can be heavyin an updo. With a two part pony tail, you make a ponytail withall your loc braids, except the ones that are on the crown/front edges ofyour head. Once you have created your first ponytail, and have adjusted it so it’scomfortable, add the remaining loose braided loc's to your first ponytail, witha second pony tail holder.
    3.      Onceyou created a ponytail, continuously grabbed a one of your loc braids fromthe bottom of the pony tail and reach it around to the top and tuck it in tothe hair band. Because my loc's are long, I don't need to use hair pins. But ifyou are having problems with getting the braids to stay tucked in, use hairpins to secure each braid that you want to tuck in. Make sure to adjustthe hair pin so it is comfortable. After a while, you will not be able to reachthe headband(s), so when you wrap the braid lock around the bun, tuck the end ofthe braid under the closes loc braid, enough to where you feel the braid issecure, and will not fall out.
    4.      Onceall the braid loc's have been tucked in, fell around to see if anybraids feel like they are loose or are sticking out; and alsotake time to adjust the bun by moving it around a little bit withboth hands to achieve the bun shape you want. But do not use to muchpressure, or your bun will fall apart. If your loc’s are shorter, you can also puta thin hair net (that matches your hair color) over your loc bun, to make surenone of your braids fall out during the day. To use a hair net - place it overyour bun, and tuck in any loose parts of the net under your bun, and secure itwith a hair pin.
    5.      Nowthat you have completed your bun, you can add a decorative headband or fancyhair clip to complete the look.  Enjoy!

TWO YEARS

Today is my 2 year natural hair anniversary! Time has flown by so fast and I am super proud to say that I have stuck with my choice of being CREAMY CRACK free.  I so do not miss my permanently, chemically altered hair. NOT AT ALL! There have definitely been some bumps in the roads but I have enjoyed my journey thus far! I look forward to many more years of growing my kinky, curly crown of glory. I appreciate you all for following my hair journey over the past couple of years, it's nice to have people in my corner! #TEAMNATURALHAIR all day ;)

Natural Beauty of the Week - Synethia

Meet Synethia - A women that has a great talent for styling locs. Synethia talked to me about her inspiration and what makes her a Natural Beauty.

Q: What is your hair story?  What kind of hair styles have you rocked, before embracing your natural hair?
A:  I have had many hairstyles from a press to jerri curls to a perm.

Q:  When and why did you decide to start wearing your hair naturally?
A:  I have decided to wear my hair naturally in second year of university. I got really tired of my hair and scalp being battered and scared from perm and damaged from the heat and over processing.

Q:  Did you have any big fears about going back to your natural texture?
A:  Going natural was a great accomplishment for me and I have had more joys than fears. I have had chemical in my hair since I was 10 years old and hardly ever knew what my natural hair looked like. Even though I did not transition to my natural hair in its loose state, I was still overjoyed that I made the step.

Q:  What are three products you can't live without for nurturing/styling your hair?
A:  Lock and twist gel, mango and lime Catcus oil, Dr Bonners Tea Tree Shampoo.

Q:  What would you say to someone who's thinking about embracing their natural hair, but scared about being rejected in various parts of their lives?
A:  I would say if you believe in your natural hair, confident about it then go for it. I have been rejected many times and because I believe that my hair in its natural state is beautiful, I have won over many into realizing that. Most times these people are unaware and need a little education and guidance. Don't crumble just be confident and strong.

Q:  How long have you had a natural hair blog? What has been the most rewarding part of your blogging experience.
A:  Jungle Barbie is 8mths and 11 days old. The most rewarding parts of my blogging experience are dispelling the myth that locks are not stylist, inspiring other locked sisters and brothers and sharing my knowledge whether it be hairstyles and or hair care tips.

Q:  How can we keep up with you and your journey i.e. blog, twitter, facebook, fotki, tumblr, personal or professional website? (Optional)

Love & Hate

Love & Hate…  Ihad a very eventful morning today.  Icame into contact with two strangers – one that that expressed hate and onethat expressed love.

    Hate Filled Rage:
While I was driving to work, a man was crossing the streetgoing in the same direction that I was driving. I stopped at the stop sign andwatched as the man and his daughter crossed the street going in my samedirection. Suddenly, with out even looking to see of any cars were coming, hestop midway in the street and tried to cross right in front of my moving car.Thankfully I was not driving too fast and was able to slow down to stop as heand his daughter crossed the street. Instead of looking my way and saying thank you (because obviously, youdo not stop in the middle of the street and try to cross into  oncoming traffic) he looked at me with completehate and started to yell out at me “You Ignorant  #%R*&!”  Thankfully I did not hear the end of that statement, because I rolled upmy care window. But by the look of pure hate on his face, he was probably goingtop call me a  B*tch or a N*gger (he wasnot of the same race).  I usually don’tassume such things, but he had pure hate in his eyes, which was completely irrationallybecause he was in the wrong. My first thought as I drove away, is that they guywas probably already angry about something else and maybe even racist (whoknows…). And most importantly, how could he put his child in danger by crossinginto incoming traffic with out evening looking to see if any cars were comingtheir way. The whole thing completely threw me off guard. And my beautifulmorning, at that moment was ruined by this person irrational hateful reaction towardsme.

    Unbiased Love:
After parking my car, I started to work towards the buildingI worked at.  A gentleman came to a stopas he saw me and a few ladies on another street walking by. He asked in a verygenuine tone – “How can it be, that all the women in this city are so verybeautiful?”   I instantly blushed andsaid I did not know and thank him for the kind compliment.  He then said with this beautiful smile andglow on his face “You are welcome beautiful lady.” It warmed my heart thatsomeone would stop their day to give such a beautiful message. And he had sucha look of piece and joy in his face that I knew he was a coming from a goodplace in his heart when he spoke to me.

Two completely different experiences, from two completestrangers. Both of a different culture and age groups. One filled with irrationalhate and one filled with genuine love for others.

Natural Hair Regrets

*GASP* Yes, you read the title right, I have some regrets about things I've done to my natural hair! How many of you are shocked? LOL, we all have our moments and we all make mistakes; so yes, I have learned some lessons on the way over the past 2 years. Like I mentioned in a previous post, September 26th will mark my 2 year natural hair journey and this past week I have been thinking about things I could've done differently to help my hair flourish, along with what I will do from here on out to keep my hair healthy.

My first and MAIN regret is coloring my hair. I know, I know, some of you said not to do in the first place but I wanted "something different" when in all actuality I should have left my hair alone! Yes, overtime I experienced some breakage which in turn stunted any type of length retention I was trying to achieve. To this day, I wish I would've just gotten highlights or maybe even nothing, versus having my whole head dyed. My advice to new naturals is to not color your hair right away. Wait, at least 3 years. That may sound like a long time but you'll have some length and hopefully would have gotten to know your hair by the time you choose to "spice it up" a little bit. I know that some may think their TWAs are boring but would you rather have boring healthy hair or borderline damaged "cute" colored hair? There is too much to loose especially if you have fragile type 4 strands like me and are trying to grow your hair to great lengths. Just a suggestion!

I have also come to accept that my hair needs to have a low maintenance regimen. Nothing "extra" because then she, LOL, yes, "she", will not flourish. That color really set me back and I would say that last December, when I started protective styling nursing my strands back to health, I can definitely see the difference.

Speaking of protecting strands! I wish I did more protective styling when I first BC'd, I regret that I didn't. I would dabble in it here and there but I used to have a bad case of "hand in hair" syndrome so I really wouldn't give my hair a break. A tip for my new natural's, "keep it simple sistah," for real! If you want healthy hair with some length, you will have to sacrifice somethings and have patience to get your hair where you'd like it. I've always struggled with hair patience but now my regimen and routine is second nature. I am retaining length and most importantly my hair is healthy!

For the most part, those are the things that I look back and say "Dang, I should've or shouldn't have..." Lesson LEARNED! Do you have any natural hair regrets? Share your experiences and learned lessons below.

    xoxo,
    Alex

Too long for TWA?

    A great question came in via email from one of the ladies participating in TGHBPSC a couple of days ago and I wanted to get your feedback. The question was from Tia, she writes;

"When do you stop considering your hair a TWA? I have very coily 3c hair with a lot of shrinkage. But if I straighten my hair I have a bob. Would my hair in its natural state still be considered a TWA?"

When I read her question, I immediately thought it was a GREAT one and to be honest, I kind of don't know the answer to it. Some of the other ladies weighed in and gave their answers.  Evelyn responded,  "Good question Tia, I still consider mine a TWA because without any stretching it doesn't touch my shoulders."

So, what is your answer to Tia's question? When do we stop considering our curls and coils a TWA?

    xoxo,
    Alex

Blog Review - Amy the Visionary Diva!

I found this great review of the Naturally Beautiful Hair blog online, and I just want to say thank you sooo much to Amy, aka - Visionary Diva!  I appreciate your taking the time to write about my blog, and I am so glad that you found it to be encouraging as you went through the beginning stages of y our natural hair journey.

    Naturally Beautiful Hair (Blog Review)
    posted by Visionary Diva
    February 9, 2011 - 3:48pm

"It was 11 years ago when I got fed up with the vigorous schedule of being in the shop every week or two getting a new hair style and every 3 months getting a perm. The oiling and wrapping up started to be to much...not to mention the harsh winters that broke my hair off and caused me to become un-be-weave-able!! Extensions led me to a whole other problem that involved my ends breaking and other unhealthy methods of gaining a eye catching hairdo. Enough was enough and I decided it was time to do something different. I can't really remember what I was thinking other than I wanted to "beauty shop tango" to stop. So sitting on my couch, armed with a pair of scissors and a mirror I began cutting my perm out and twisting my hair. I was happy with the out come and have been every since.

What I didn't realize at that time was how hard it was to find magazines or beauty shops willing to aid in maintaining my wonderful locs. As the years went by more hair products came out...some I liked and some that were just awful from the start. In the end most of what I learned came from word of mouth and trial and error. That is until recently!!

Anybody who knows me knows that I am always online and always on the look out for new sites, intriguing articles and art work (just to name a few). The other day while googling random topics and reading random blogs I came across a site that stopped me in my tracks and held my attention for 2 hours. There seemed to be some type of halo glowing over the top of my computer and I was mesmerized.

The site was all about MY hair! Not black hair in general...not permed or straight hair. It was not a site with millions of pictures of different hair styles and a small section on natural hair...no it was all about my beautiful natural hair and titled accordingly (without the my of course). Mentally I was jumping for joy as my eyes danced across the different pages filled with interviews, tips on how to keep my locs looking healthy, and  even artwork showcasing and inspired by natural hair. Who knew there was a remedy to that pesky lint situation that so many loc wearer's battle with or that a brush could come in handy!

Besides some very useful information I found the site to be very welcoming and organized for quick reference. There's something about the tone of each piece that lets the reader know how much care goes into the development of the site. This [blog] is a "grab a book and cup of tea" kind of good only it's about Naturally Beautiful Hair!!"

Afro Glitz Magazine Project

Check out the Afro Glitz Magazine Project.

"For "afro" women like me, there's a lack of representation of both appearance and interests in magazines that are marketed towards us. I do not close these magazines feeling empowered, inspired or more knowledgeable than before. Rather than doing absolutely nothing to solve this issue, I vowed to be the change that I wanted to see.  I now present to you: The Afro Glitz Magazine Project. We're women of many dreams and talents.  We love to create.  We love to build.  We love to learn. We love to inspire. Afro Glitz will be a magazine for the creatives, beauty lovers, fashionistas, writers, health enthusiasts, science lovers and techie geeks.  In addition, this magazine will be a true reflection of its audience, allowing one to submit content to the magazine.  Each article will be presented in an artsy, high quality fashion. Here are a couple of examples of how articles would be presented in the magazine:"  - Afro Glitz

Your Thoughts: Are Women More Judgmental Than Tween Girls?

I always thought tween/teen girls would be much more judgmental of each other than adult women would ever dream of being toward a child. Agreed? Recent events have actually led me to believe otherwise, at least where natural hair is concerned.

The majority of girls at Syd's school with tight curls are already using chemicals to straighten their coils. That doesn't stop Syd from showing off her love of big curly hair, though. And nobody at school has ever had a single negative thing to say about it. But when an unexpected rain storm popped up and wreaked havoc on Syd's style, she and I were both nervous.

Here's what happened. Do you remember this twist out style from a couple weeks ago? Well, what I didn't tell you in that post is that it rained that morning. The weather man didn't say it was going to rain. The forecast didn't say it was going to rain. But it rained. And Syd didn't have an umbrella.

When she left the house, she looked like this:

When she came home, she looked like this:

The rain had completely ruined her twist out. And there was still some definition left over, but only in random places. Her hair was stuck somewhere between a style with defined curls and an undefined afro type of style.  Either of those styles are loved at our house, but this whole in between look? Not so beloved.

To top this off, Syd's first middle school dance was held that day after school. She said she had pulled it into a low ponytail just for an hour to get it off her neck while she danced.

When she got home, I asked her if anyone at school had said anything about her hair. Surprisingly, she said the only comments she got were POSITIVE ones. (I guess Syd isn't the only one at her school who loves big hair!) But when we went to the store later that night, her frizzy hair received more than one disapproving look from adult women. When we were walking away from the hair products aisle, I even heard one woman tell her daughter (who looked to be around Syd's age and had relaxed hair), "THAT is why you need a relaxer."

It took everything in me to keep walking instead of going back to tell that woman exactly how I felt about her attitude, Syd's hair, and people thinking they HAVE to use chemicals to make their hair look good. But I was the bigger person. Syd hadn't heard her, so even though it stung, I pretended I hadn't heard her either.

Ever since that day, I've thought about how much more judgmental the grown women in the store were than the middle school girls that Syd was around. It was surprising that the adults seem to have more of a "mean girls" attitude than the tweens and teenagers.

What do you think? Have you ever experienced anything like this, either from kids or other adults?
