Captured Curls: Fatima of Flowers from Fatima

    Please, introduce yourself.
My name is Fatima Spencer. I am 22 years old and reside in Cincinnati, Ohio.  I am a recent graduate and have earned my BA in Spanish, with a focus in Advertising. Aside from Flowers From Fatima, I spend much of my time with my family. Aside from my craft, I enjoy making music (YES, instrumentals!)

What was your inspiration behind starting Flowers from Fatima?
I was inspired to start Flowers From Fatima from my involvement in gardening as a young girl. Growing up, my father decided to pursue a family run program for the improvement of our neighborhood. Alone, my family and I transformed the neighborhood into a paradise. It was then, 12 years ago, that I found an attraction for natural beauty and have grown to connect with our Mother Nature in all ways possible. The seed of Flowers From Fatima was planted then.

Since you are a natural girl too, would you mind sharing your hair regimen?
My regime changes from time to time. Right now, I pre-condition my hair with natural vitamin E. It works wonders for thickness, bounce, and SHINE! Then I wash with a natural shampoo, which varies way too often to mention! But depending on how I feel, I may deep condition with the well-known avocado mixture.

How long have you been natural, did you big chop or transition?
It has been 3 years and counting since I've transitioned.

Do you wear your own hair accessories? If so, what is your favorite piece from your beautiful collection?
You know it! I love wearing flowers in my hair and I enjoy designing pieces just for myself to wear. Right now, MY personal favorite from the collection is the GoldenSunflower Hair, which has been our best-seller as well!

What advice would you give other women of color who want to embark on the entrepreneurship journey?
Think good thoughts and the rest shall follow! It all starts with the mind.

What makes you love your kinks and curls?
What’s NOT to love about our beautiful, unique, NATURAL hair? The “Spiral, or curl, is the symbol for life and “spir”ituality.

Is there anything extra, like words of wisdom that you’d like to share with other naturals?
At times, managing your natural hair can be difficult, tiresome, and discouraging. We put up resistance against our hair and it resists us. However, it is important to realize that as with anything else, our hair must be treated with love and care. Then, those hair wars will come to peace.
