    What you will need

Black Shoe String or Pantyhose/Knee High (CVS)
A thick pomade (Oyin Burnt Sugar)
    Soft Bristle Brush
    Bobby Pins
    Satin Scarf

Side Note: Whether your hair is blown out or not will determine what products you will use.
I'd suggest a gel, like Eco Styler Olive Oil, if you are trying to "puff" wet hair.

Check in x Length Check

My hair is growing like a weed! Every time I take down a protective style I feel like I can see and tell the difference in the overall appearance of my strands. They seem stronger, healthier and I've been retaining my growth which is a huge plus. In the above picture my hair is freshly washed and stretched with cool air, that took FOREVER! I have realized that I  my only way to have a "stress free" styling session is with stretched hair. My strands are so thick and dense, it's nearly impossible or enjoyable for me to style it without it being stretched.

Since today was my co-wash day my whole styling process took about 2 hours. The longer my hair gets the more I dread doing it,LOL! I love my mane but sometimes "she" is just too much to handle. I honestly think that's why I have fallen in love with PS'ing because my styling is limited and low maintenance.

Under the jump you can find the check in video for the TGHBPSC challenge along with a mini length check and some more hair pictures. I hope you all enjoy!

How to do FUN hair color on your girls! Video Tutorial

So my fabulous hair stylist friend, who's always doing something fun and exciting, put some super darling colors in her girls' hair this summer. When my gals saw it, they immediately turned to me with those puppy dog eyes that pled "PUHLEEZE Mommy!?" We had to give it a try! Because it's semi permanent, I felt ok about putting it in their healthy and pristine never-been-damaged hair (well, I felt less guilty). Take a peek!

I love how it peeks out from her braid here:

The pics of my older brunette's color didn't do the color justice, so I didn't include them. Don't be put off by my photo UN-expertise skills, this was really fun! My little blondie really loved having "barbie' hair for a few weeks!

French Braided Ponytail

Remember last weekend when I said in this post that I would band Syd's hair at night and then throw it up into a quick style every morning? It was a great idea. Unfortunately, I didn't follow through. Instead, I did a different kind of ponytail that she wore for a few days.

The very front of Syd's hairline was still in a single cornrow, as seen back in the post mentioned above. I just left that alone, since it still looked good. I divided the rest of her hair into 4 sections, with one part going from front to back and another one going from ear to ear.

I french braided each section toward the center where the parts intersected.

When all 4 sections had been french braided, I joined them into a ponytail. The ponytail consisted of 3 tendrils of hair from each of the 4 french braids. I braided each tendril, resulting in a ponytail made of 12 individual braids.

After 2 days of that style, we removed the individual braids but kept the french braids and she had a great looking braid out ponytail.

I've done countless cornrow ponytails through the years, but this was the first time I had ever even thought of using french braids instead. I think I'll have to explore this more...I love the way it looks!

TGHBPSC: Month 1 Check In

Ladies, we have made it one whole month! YAY!!! Can you sense my excitement? For some of you wearing protective styles hasn't been easy but I want to congratulate you for hanging in there and seeking advice from the other TGHBPSC participants. I have had so much fun emailing you all back and forth, exchanging photos and watching the videos/style tutorials posted! Keep them coming.

Today is style day for me  (hence why the massive hair is in a puff in the pic) and I will attempt to do a length check for y'all. I am hoping to make a style tutorial video today along with a quick video check in on YT. School started for me Monday and I am swamped-- it's only the third day! If that doesn't happen to day, I will have it done by the weekend.

So, this post is just a reminder that we made it ONE MONTH protecting our strands and I am excited to see everyone's progress another month from now. LET'S KEEP GROWING!

    xoxo,
    Alex

Alicia Keys - Un-thinkable (I'm Ready)

Alicia Keys has an amazing song out called "Un-thinkable (I'm Ready)".  Along with the song, Alicia made a very powerful video, that touches on the racial tensions that surround interracial relationships. The video begins in the 1950s, where Alicia's character faces anger and disapproval from her community for dating someone that is of a different race. The video covers over 6 decades, to the present day, showing that not much has changed since that time.

This video really impressed me because I could feel a lot of the emotions from the scenes that reminded me of what I went through in my own life. My relationship with my boyfriend, who is a different race, is amazing - because he is amazing!!  Not because his skin is a different color than mine. Being a part of a interracial relationship is no different then being in a relationship with someone of your own race. The only difference is that there are people in the world that choose to treat you with hate, because of their own ignorance or self hatred.

"This is my and my boyfriend's song. Its unfortunate that others can't see the love we share for each other. instead they see a Latin and African American together and start to judge. Love is deeper than skin color."
    - Nancy

"In the video (from the 50s to the 2000s), people have not been accepting interracial relationships. She [Alicia] just shows that prejudice has not changed much since 60 years ago." - Caitlin H.

"It's crazy how not much has changed since back in the day. I use to think racism was dead until this summer when my mom found out my boyfriend was black. She freaked out. Race doesn't matter. Let's be more open-minded than previous generations and end racism! Finally." - MGL

"Interracial Love is beautiful! This song isn't attacking black men nor white men or anything just stating a truth, as to how it once was and in some areas, still is!!! Please grow up and recieve knowledge and understanding becasue IGNORANCE is not a pretty trait!!!" - Y.A.M

"I think that interracial love is beautiful, and also natural. We live in the 21st century, and I would hope to think that you would be able to date anyone, no matter race or origin, without being judged for your own decision. Just because you prefer white men over black man does not make you self hating, just as preferring black men does not make you a racist against white men. It's just preference, I think that the whole point of the video is, that LOVE is colorblind." - B.B.C

This song is one of many great songs off of Alicia Key's album "The Element of Freedom".

Sides Back with Braids

Pull her sides back but leave about an inch of hair just above her ears on each side (this is going to be braided)
Take the 1" hair and make a braid.  Do this on both sides then pull the braids toward the sides back ponytail and secure them overlapping each other with bobbie pins.

Healthy Hair Becomes Longer Hair

The question I get asked most often is some variation of:
"How can I get my (or my daughter's) hair as long as Syd's?"

Unfortunatley, there is no magic formula, cream, or pill. The best advice I can give is to make sure your hair is moisturized and stop being so rough with it.

Dried out hair is more fragile and more likely to break off. Make sure you are keeping those strands nice and moisturized. At this point, I'm sure several of you are thinking, "What products should I use?"

That's actually the second most frequently asked question I receive. I could tell you what products we use most often on Syd's hair, but that might not help. Every head of hair is different. It's a process of trial and error until you find the products you like best for your own hair. Does something make your hair feel dry by the end of the day? If so, I'd suggest moving on and trying something new. If your hair seems too weighed down, go for something a little lighter. It can be frustrating as you search for the "perfect" product or combination of products, but once you discover what works for you, it's smooth sailing and happy hair. (For the record, we use Bee Mine Luscious Moisturizer and Aussie Moist conditioner more often than any others for moisture.)

The number one reason that hair seems to stop getting any longer is because it is breaking off just as fast (and sometimes faster!) than it is growing. Ripping a brush or comb through your hair is a great way to ensure that it breaks off and negates the length retention you're striving for.

Be gentle. Take your time. Use your fingers to separate your tangled hair as much as possible. Be mindful of how often you are putting beads, barrettes, and rubber bands on the ends of the hair. You don't have to completely eliminate those things, but consistently using them  on a daily basis will contribute to breakage (read: lack of length).

And of course, genetics also play a part in the length of your hair. Some heads of hair grow much faster than others. There is also something called terminal length. This is the length that is reached when each strand ends the growing stage in the growth cycle (called the anagen phase). When a strand reaches the end of that stage, it remains dormant for a while before shedding on its own. Someone whose hair grows slower than average and has a fairly short-lived anagen stage won't be able to grow their hair as long as someone who has a faster growth rate and longer growth cycle.

I think the most important part of growing your hair is to make sure your hair remains healthy by staying moisturized and as undamaged as possible. Learn to embrace your healthy strands, no matter what their length. And in time, healthy hair will become longer hair.

Photographer Leon Dale - Images You'll Love

For any one that looks for images online, depending on the site you to go - finding beautiful images for women with big natural hair is not easy. But thanks to Photographer Leon Dale, we will have another great option for finding beautiful images of women with natural hair.  Leon is currently working on a project called The Big Natural Hair Project.

"The Big Natural Hair project is a celebration of Black women with natural hair. The explosive crown of natural hair was once frowned upon, considered unkempt or too ethic for the work place.  It is now so muchmore appreciated and respected.  It has been covered by mainstreammagazines, featured in fashion spreads and on characters in prime time T.V. Ithas a thriving online community both for those who wear the style and those whoare enamoured by it.

The big natural hair project is my homage to natural hairduring this period of renewed interest.  The women who decide to wear their hair natural do so fornumerous reasons and come from diverse backgrounds. Not all of them areneo-soul, not all of them are afro-centric and the style can be rocked in manydifferent ways, from out right afro to frohawks and twists. It can shine, itcan kink, it can curl, natural hair can blow in the wind or stand in defiantcoils.

The women in this collection are particularly proud of theirhair and it shows. Their hair no longer simply a shield from the sun, but anexpression of a life style, a unique and personal accessory.  Put in itssimplest terms, the plumage that is natural hair is hot.  I believe itsbeautiful and there's a large and growing fan base that's right along side me."  - Leon Dale

Wavy Hair

Our goal is usually to try all kinds of different styles so instead of the crimping or making ringlets we found a wavy iron.  I have included a picture below to show you what ours looks like.

All we did for this cute style was started with the underneath hair and made small parts starting at the scalp and working your way to the ends of her hair.  It is the same as crimping her hair with a crimping iron.

The "I Don't Wanna" French Braid

    So here's what happened...

It was about 7:00 in the evening when I sat down to style Syd's hair. I started out with one cornrow across the front of her hairline.

After that cornrow, I decided I just wasn't in the mood to do hair. You know the feeling, right? The one where you want to stomp your foot and whine like a 3 year old because you just don't want to do it?

Well I'm proud to announce that I did not, in fact, throw a temper tantrum. I did, however, stop styling Syd's hair. I banded the back of her hair and decided that I would just wake up 15 minutes earlier and do a quick style in the morning.

You'll notice that I did take the time to make fairly straight parts before I banded her hair. This is so these banded ponytails can be pulled back into one or two low ponytails if we needed to go somewhere before her hair was styles. I learned the hard way that sometimes things come up and you have to leave the house unexpectedly. Having a preteen with her hair banded without so much as a straight part is NOT a fun situation to be in for mom or child. Trust me on this.

Fast forward to the next morning. I had a head full of hair to style in under 20 minutes. I was going to throw it up in a bun, but I took a good look at her hair. It was stretched and well moisturized, which means it was really shiny. I decided to leave the one cornrow in front and show off how silky and shiny the rest of her hair was by putting it into one big french braid.

I think I'll reband her hair every evening this week so we can do quick styles before school every morning. I'll show you at the end of the week what styles we decide on.

Sharing the Spotlight: Not Your Average Braids by Goldilocks*n*Me

Thank you to 6 year old Goldilocks and mommy Tav from Goldilocks*n*Me for jumping in to take their turn in the spotlight! They have sent in pictures of two amazing braid styles. Despite the complex look of the braids, Tav explains how to do them on her blog and says they were both done before school in about 5 or 10 minutes. That makes them even better!

This first style is an uneven braid with 2 tiny strands braided normally and then braided with the remaining hair to form a large uneven braid. A pretty lace ribbon was added, too.

The second style is a 4 strand flat woven braid using 3 strands of hair and 1 strand of grosgrain ribbon.

I love both of these looks! To get more detailed instructions and to find other very creative styles, head on over to Goldilocks*n*Me to see what you can find. Thanks again for sharing!

Big Bows

Hair accessories are my curls best friend. I have been extremely attached to hair clips, hair combs,  flowers, bows, ribbons, butterflies... LOL you name it, since I first went natural. If it can go in my hair I will rock it. Recently big hair bows have my obsession. They are super cute and can bring so much life to any style; not mention they are easy to make.  A lot of you know that I am the DIY queen, I love crafting and being creative. So, I went on YouTube earlier this week to figure out how to make a hair bow out of fabric. There were so many tutorials that helped me out, it took a few tries for me to get it down pack but once I did, I made not one but 3 hair bows and  I will definitely be making more. Below is a picture of the very first one that I made and wore--I LOVE IT!

A lot of ladies have asked me to make them one and for how much.
    Info is below.

    Medium:$9
    Large: $12

Fish Tail Wrap

As my daughter is getting older she wants more grown up styles here is one that turned out really cute.
I started with making her far lateral part.  Then I made a fish tail braid on the side of her head with the least amount of hair.  As you can see below it is french fish tailed (if that is what you call it)  then I finished fish tail braiding all the way to the end of her hair.  ***you need to braid the hair long enough that it reaches the other side of her head.
Once the braid is finished secure it with an elastic.
Drape the braid across the back of her head and end it above her opposite ear.  Pull the top hair up and secure with bobbie pins the end of the fish tail braid.  As shown below.  Pull the top hair down over to hide the elastic and bobbie pins.  ***if you cross the bobbie pins they stay in much better***

We then swooped the front top of her hair and added a flower over the top to ensure the bobbie pins were hidden.

Toddler Braids and Ribbons

First start by pulling a small piece of hair across the front of her head and secure it on the side with an elastic.
Then make a 2nd part and french braid this hair.  Pulling the first ponytail into the braid then secure with an elastic.
Make a parallel 2nd french braid secure it with an elastic.
Take a piece of ribbon and start at the top weaving it in and out of the braid crossing the ribbon in the center of the 2 braids.
I wrapped the ends of the ribbon around both ponytails and tied the ribbon in a bow.

Natural Hair Coloring Book!?!

What if there were coloring books for our little girls and young women, that inspired them to love their natural hair?  I do not know if a coloring book like this already exist - but if they do, please reply to this post, and let us know the Title of the book and the Authors name, so we can look it up.  Until then, I thought it would be great to start a collection of Natural Hair Drawings that can be printed out and given to our kids, so they can color them in.  Here are few sketches to start off with (see artist credits below):

I will continue to add drawings to an online album, that I will create on the Naturally Beautiful Hair facebook page, to add to this collection. If you have a great sketch or know of an artist that has great sketches, please contact me at naturalhairbeauty@gmail.com.  Or you can post the photo on the N.B.H. Facebook wall.

Artist:  Jacques Provitt, Ehlin, SayaDarkholme, Ehlin, Qmab, BasicLee, Izryell, Molleren, Ebonfire, Kevin Winters

Here are a few of my own sketches, that will make great print outs for coloring pages. Enjoy!
